titleOfInvention DECORATIVE AND STRUCTURAL PLASTIC COATING INTENDED FOR INTERNAL USE OF AUTOMOTIVES, PROCESS AND FLEXIBLE THERMOPLASTIC LAMINATED MATERIAL INTENDED TO BE USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE SAME.
abstract An automotive interior coating material comprises a paint film composed of a thermoplastic resinous base coat and a clear coat adhered to the outer surface of a thermoplastically moldable, semi-rigid, resinous backsheet. The paint film composed of the base coat and the clear coat is preferably formed by means of dry paint transfer techniques in which the clear coat and the pigmented base are first applied on a polyester carrier and dried, after which they are proceeds to transfer / laminating the film from the carrier to the backing sheet on which the transparent layer constitutes a protective outer surface of low gloss. The clearcoat material preferably comprises an alloy of an acrylic resin and a fluoropolymer resin, preferably polyvinylidene fluoride. The low surface gloss of the clear coat is produced by means of a uniformly dispersed fine particulate filler, such as silica in combination with its application on a matte carrier. Thermoforming of the composite laminate for the purpose of forming a three-dimensional body reduces the surface gloss measured at 60 degrees to a level of less than about 15 units, preferably less than 10 units. In one embodiment, the gloss level is less than about 2 units. A flexible thermoplastic laminate material and process is provided for use in the manufacture of said material for lining.
