abstract A spark ignition engine fuel composition consisting essentially of a hydrocarbon component consisting of one or more hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of branched or unbranched chain alkanes of four to eight carbon atoms essentially free of olefins, aromatics, and sulfur, where said hydrocarbon component has a minimum anti-detonation index of 65 measured by ASTMD-2699 and D-2700 and a maximum EPVS of 1,055kg / cm 2 (15 Lbr / in2) measured by ASTM D-5191; a fuel grade alcohol; and a co-solvent miscible in both said hydrcarbon component and said fuel grade alcohol; wherein said hydrocarbon component, said fuel grade alcohol and said co-solvent are present in effective amounts selected to provide a motor fuel with a minimum anti-detonation index of 87 as measured by ASTM D-2699 and ASTM D-2700, and a maximum EPVS 15 ps measured by ASTM D-5191. Also described is a method of lowering the vapor pressure of a hydrocarbon-alcohol mixture by adding a co-solvent for the hydrocarbon and alcohol to the mixture.
