Compounds of formula (I), as a single stereoisomer or as a mixture of stereoisomers, where: m is 3,4,5 or 6; and n is 0, 1, 3, or 4; so that: when is 3 or 4; and n is 1, 2, 3, or 4; then A is -CH2-, -O-, or -N (R11) -, where R11 is hydrogen or or alkyl; R1 is a) -CH2-R4 where R4 is mercapto, acetylthio, carboxy, hydroxyaminocarbonyl, N-hydroxyiformylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aralkoxycarbonyl, benzyloxy-aminocarbonyl, or -P (: O) OHS-R6 in which R6 isquinol-2- yl, naphth-1-yl, naphth-2-yl, pyridyl or phenyl substituted or not; b) -CH (R7) -R8 where R8 is HOOC-, HOHNOC-; R7 is OH, NH2, alkyl, alkyl or arylamino, alkyl, arylsulfonylamino, H2NOC-, alkoxy or aminocarbonyl, or -CH2NHR where Res H, alkyl- or aryl-, 2-benzoxazole, -SO2Ra, -SO2NHRa, -SO2ORa, - C: ORa, -COORa, -CONHRa where Ra is substituted alkyl or not; or c) -NH-CH (R9) -R10 where R9 is hydrogen, alkyl or aralkyl, and R10 is escarboxy, alkoxycarbonyl or aralkoxycarbonyl, phosphonyl, dialkylphosphonyl or methoxyphosphonyl; R2 is alkyl, trifluoromethylalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, aryl, aryloxyalkyl, or aralkyl; and R3 is hydrogen, halo, alkyl, or alkoxy; or when n is 0; and m is 4, 5 or 6; then A is -CH (R12) where R12 is carb oxy, alkoxycarbonyl or optionally substituted carbamoyl. They are single stereoisomers or mixtures thereof and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts which inhibit matrix metalloproteases, such as interstitial collagenases and which are useful for the treatment of arthritic diseases or bone resorption diseases, such as osteoporosis. |
