abstract A composition for the controlled release of a xanthine stimulant or a xanthine derivative, comprising microparticles including a biodegradable matrix of at least one water-soluble material and the stimulant, said stimulant being in the form of solid particles that are substantially uniformly distributed throughout through the entire array. Furthermore, a method for preparing this composition by dispersing the stimulant in the form of a plurality of particles in a biodegradable matrix is disclosed. Said composition can advantageously be administered orally by increasing the alertness of an individual.
