titleOfInvention | Process to convert iron carbide to steel |
abstract | A two-stage reaction for the production of steel from iron carbide is carried out in two separate but interrelated reactors. In the first reactor, iron carbide is charged with slag formers at one feed end and the reaction is It is completely mixed by the lageometry of the container, the stirring action caused by the action of the subsurface injection of oxygen and the loading of iron carbide, and the evolution of liquid metal bath gases. The product, which contains approximately 0.5-2% carbon, is loaded into the second reactor, where it is refined with oxygen injected below the surface. The second reaction is autogenous, and the evolved carbon monoxide is charged to the first reactor, where it is burned with oxygen in a foamy slag which, with the post combustion burning in the CO slag evolved in the first reactor, and with preheating of iron carbide with the sensible heat of the exhaust from the first reaction, makes that reaction also essentially autogenous. |
